Bikes made in UK and Ireland

In the map below (and the table below that), there are 39 bicycle brands that still make bikes in the UK and Ireland. You can filter the list by bike type and the frame material, to help find exactly what you’re looking for.

If you know of any other bikes that are still made in the UK or Ireland, please leave a comment and I will add them to the list!

Plus, at the bottom of the page, are two more tables. The first one contains bikes assembled in the UK and Ireland. While the second one has UK and Irish bike brands that make their bikes entirely overseas.

What does “made in UK” (or Ireland) mean?

In the UK and Ireland, the use of the “made in the UK” or “made in Ireland” label seems to be dependent on any one of three different factors:

  1. where the last substantial change to the product was made
  2. how much extra value was added to the product
  3. whether the process caused a change of tariff classification.

Which seems quite complicated.

To me, it seems like there should be some distinction between bikes that are assembled in the UK, and bikes that are manufactured in the UK. And obviously that’s the same for Ireland too!

Bikes that are assembled in the UK (or Ireland), are made from frames and components that are all usually manufactured overseas and then imported and put them together in UK (or Ireland) based workshops.

While, bikes that are manufactured in the UK or Ireland, are made with frames that are created in the same country. Of course, many, if not all, of the other components will be manufactured overseas. And the frame material will usually come from overseas too!

But it seems to me we should make a clear distinction between manufactured and assembled.

So in my lists, the distinction is the frame, which is the most important component of any bike. If the frame is made in the UK (or Ireland), I consider the bike to be made in the UK (or Ireland).

Do these brands make all their bikes in the UK or Ireland?

Not always. Some of the brands listed above sell bikes that are made outside the UK and Ireland, alongside bikes that are made in the UK and Ireland. Most of the time this is clearly indicated on their website, but not always.

It’s always better to ask them yourselves, as things can change!

What are Custom bikes?

One of the filters in the map and the tables, is for “custom” bikes. In this case, “custom” means bespoke frames. This means that the bike brand will create a “made to measure” frame with custom geometry designed for your body dimensions.

It doesn’t mean you can customize your frame with different colors or choose specific components to customize your bike (although this service is offered by several of the brands in the list).
